Workshop & Program

Terms of Participation

Assumption of Risk

Participants acknowledge that working with hand tools, natural finishes including oil and Urushi, and participating in ocean sessions involves inherent risks. By enrolling, the participant voluntarily assumes full responsibility for any injury or loss that may arise from participation.

Release of Liability

By enrolling in the program, participants acknowledge and accept the inherent risks involved in woodworking and ocean activities. Participation is voluntary and undertaken at the participant’s own responsibility. The School and its instructors and assistants are not liable for injuries or losses arising from participation, except where such liability cannot legally be excluded.

Participant Responsibility

Participants agrees to:

  • Follow all safety instructions and demonstrations

  • Use tools and equipment only as instructed

  • Wear recommended protective equipment

  • Immediately report unsafe conditions

Failure to follow safety guidance may result in dismissal from the program without refund.

Health & Allergies

Participants confirm that they are physically capable of participating.

Urushi & Natural Finishes

Urushi is a traditional natural lacquer derived from the sap of the lacquer tree. In many individuals, skin contact may cause irritation or allergic reactions, including rashes.

Participants acknowledge this risk and agree to disclose any known allergies, sensitivities, or prior reactions to Urushi or similar substances before participation.

Participants agree to follow all safety instructions when handling Urushi, including wearing protective gloves and avoiding direct skin contact.

The School reserves the right to restrict or prohibit the use of Urushi by any participant if there is reason to believe that its use may pose a health risk.

The School is not responsible for allergic reactions or other health conditions that were not disclosed prior to participation.

Tools & Property

Participants agree to exercise due care in the use of all tools, equipment, and facilities.

Participants are financially responsible for damage caused by misuse, negligence, or intentional misconduct.

Ocean Activities

Ocean sessions are voluntary and dependent on conditions.

Participants acknowledge the unpredictable nature of the ocean and assume full responsibility for any water-based participation.

Media & Intellectual Property

The School may photograph or record activities during the program for educational, archival, or promotional purposes, including use on websites, printed materials, and social media platforms.

Participants who do not wish to appear in such materials must notify the School in writing prior to the program.

Participants are welcome to take photographs and short video recordings for personal use.

However, the program curriculum, teaching materials, demonstrations, methods, and instructional content are the intellectual property of the School and may not be recorded in full, reproduced, distributed, or shared publicly without prior written consent.

Accommodation & Living Expenses

Unless expressly stated otherwise in writing, enrollment fees cover only the instruction and activities included in the program. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation, meals, travel arrangements, and personal expenses unless alternative arrangements are specifically provided by the School.

Program Changes, Cancellation & Refunds

The School reserves the right to modify schedules, substitute instructors, reschedule sessions, or make reasonable changes to program content when necessary due to unforeseen circumstances.

If global pandemic-related travel restrictions, government regulations, or lockdowns affect entry into Japan or prevent the program from taking place as scheduled, Lasca Woodworks will offer alternate dates. If rescheduling is not possible, a full refund of the enrollment fee will be issued, minus any transfer or transaction fees incurred.

In the event that the program is interrupted, postponed, modified, or cancelled due to circumstances beyond the School's reasonable control, including but not limited to serious illness, injury, incapacity, death, natural disasters, government actions, travel restrictions, or other force majeure events, the School shall not be liable for any travel expenses, accommodation costs, loss of opportunity, or other consequential expenses incurred by participants.

Where reasonably possible, the School will make good-faith efforts to provide alternate dates, substitute instruction, credits toward a future program, or other suitable alternatives. However, participants acknowledge that such circumstances may make continuation of the program impossible, and no refund shall be due except where expressly stated in these Terms or where required by applicable law.
